We have learned that the microbial diversity interacting with the human body goes far beyond what can be cultured in the laboratory. Pertubation of the balance of the microbial diversity is being asscoiated with various disease states, and re-establishing a "healthy" balance may be opening the door to a new era of therapeutics. We will discuss concepts of the microbiome, examine some of the therapeutic options, and how micrbiome manipulation can function as therapy alternatives to antimicrobials for infectious diseases syndromes. 

Objectives

As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to:

• Define terms such as microbiome, microbiota, probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics
• Describe the utility and functioning of probiotics and assess the difficulty in studying their efficacy
• Explain the process and proposed mechanism-of-action of the fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT)
