Dr. Ilka Lowensteyn is a Medical Scientist at the Centre for Cardiovascular Risk Assessment at the McGill University Health Centre and an adjust assistant professor in the department of Medicine at McGill University Health Centre. She is also the Director of Clinical Research for the Cardiovascular Health Improvement Program (CHIP), which is a cardiac rehabilitation program for the McGill teaching hospitals. After graduating with a doctoral degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Miami, she completed an NHRDP post-doctoral fellowship at McGill University. Published research to date includes determining the impact of computerized risk profiles on patients coronary risk, evaluating the prognostic role of exercise stress testing in an asymptomatic population, determining the cost-effectiveness of exercise training, and evaluating the benefits of exercise in the treatment of dyslipidemia, fibromyalgia, post-partum depression, and diabetes. Dr. Lowensteyn's major research interests are studying the benefits of exercise for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. She is also evaluating the clinical impact of computerized risk profiles on adherence to treatment for cardiovascular risk factors. Other research interests include evaluating the benefits of exercise for preventing and treating diseases such as cancer, metabolic syndrome, and obesity.
